You already know that omega-3 fats are good for heart heath. More exciting news was presented at the Advances in Dietary Fats & Nutrition conference about the role of omega-3 fats in children’s brain development, and the healing of concussions.
Omega-3 fats play an important role in the development of the brain, eyes and nerves of young children. Scientists revealed that most Canadian children do not get sufficient omega-3 fats, which may be detrimental to their long term health. Emerging research also shows that omega-3 fats may contribute to the healing of brain concussions and the related “inflammatory cascade”. Researchers state that “preliminary studies demonstrate that omega-3s can increase the resilience of the brain to withstand some injury and have favorable effects for improving the outcome if an injury were to occur.”
